The Complete Furnace Maintenance Guide: Keep Your Home Warm All Winter
What do You need?
You’ll need gloves, a vacuum, a brush, a furnace filter, and a screwdriver or nut driver. Be sure to turn off the gas and seal the gas valve before repairing your furnace.
Why Does Your Furnace Need Cleaning?
Dust, pollen, and other airborne contaminants are reduced to a minimum by a furnace filter. A dust buildup on the filter will reduce the furnace’s effectiveness over time, causing it to work less efficiently.
In extreme cases, the heat exchanger might overheat if the airflow is restricted too much. As a result, replacing the furnace filter is required. The filter is positioned on the cold air return duct every three to six months.
How to Clean it the Right Way?
- Look at the filter’s arrows to see which way they point. Draw a hand across the tops with a Sharpie.
- The disposable filter in most furnaces has a cardboard frame and should be changed. It may be possible to clean it with a vacuum or a damp cloth, but read your furnace’s instruction booklet first.
- Your filter’s height, breadth, and thickness may be measured if you don’t see any numbers on the filter.
- Select the Merv rating or the minimum efficiency reporting value once you’ve chosen the filter type and size.
- An air filter’s Merv rating indicates how well it removes contaminants from the air. The Merv rating and the appropriate filter size must be matched for this to work. Generic filters are equivalent to OEM filters in terms of performance.
- Remove the panel on the top. Some furnaces need a screwdriver or socket wrench, while others employ a push-lock or twist lock. After that, vacuum the inside using a shop vac.
- Any hard-to-reach areas can be reached using a clean toothbrush. To check for fractures or abnormalities in the heat exchanger, access it.
When to Call a Professional?
Call a specialist if you see any cracks. Carbon monoxide from the heat exchanger may seep into your house.
Now, take a look at the burner. This is buried under a cover on some models. Call a professional if you notice any burn marks or frayed wiring.
